Boston Public Schools (BPS), along with the City of Boston, is embarking on a 10-year journey to optimize and improve the BPS school facilities in order to create the greatest educational experience for students and teachers.

The start of the project included a two-year educational and facilities master plan, where each of the 128 district buildings were evaluated on a number of fronts. The amount of data collected from each building was enormous, and how it could be effectively communicated became an issue. The solution included approachable design on two levels: the master planning study report that was due to the client, and an interactive data dashboard, which would house all the data collected in a manner that allows schools to be searchable and comparable.

Along with these deliverables, a flexible identity was created to showcase building blocks (an obvious association with learning and kids) in a way that allowed them to create various meaningful icons that related to the goals of the project. The blocks help show optimization, shelter, students, progress, and so on. A color system was created to be vibrant and fun, just like the students of BPS.
